Men and psychology
MISC Psychology Services provides specialised psychological support for men. Society has changed dramatically in the past 30 years. With these changes, new issues have emerged for men that have required them to find new ways to deal with problems. As a result many men have felt confused, frustrated and unprepared for the challenges they need to deal with. Our experience has shown that men generally have not received the support they need, especially in times of personal crisis (the suicide rate for men is staggeringly high after crisis). At MISC we receive many phone calls from men seeking support for a broad range of issues. MISC Psychology Services aims to assist men to move through difficult times, get back on track and to begin to live the life that they really want.
In 1992, following marriage divorce, the suicide rate for men was 3 times that of divorced women. Young males committed suicide 4.8 times the rate of young females. (Source: ABS Statistics cited in report “Family Breakdown in Australia” (2005), Malcolm Mathias, President of the Lone Fathers Association).
The type of issues that men often seek support for include:
- Mid-life crisis
- Relationship problems and breakdown
- Child Custody issues
- Alcohol & Drug Abuse
- Anger Management
- Emotional Awareness
- Sexual Problems
- Low Self-Esteem
- Support through issues associated with WorkCover
What can MISC Psychology services offer?
At MISC we have a registered Psychologist - Gordon Wagner (B. Psych Hons) who is experienced in guiding men through the many obstacles that modern men are facing in today’s world. Gordon operates independently at MISC and has had around 18 years of experience in personal development. He has also worked previously as a Life Coach and Counsellor. Gordon’s approach is down to earth and tailored to each person’s needs. He has dealt with his own share of personal tragedies and is highly committed to each and every man seeking support. His experience has taken him through the ups and downs of many men’s lives and as a result he has a good understanding of the problems men experience in today’s world. Most of the men who have seen Gordon have achieved excellent results in a short amount of time (usually 5-8 sessions). Gordon’s unique style of therapy allows men to break free from past conditioning, making way for new possibilities for the future. What seemed hopeless before is later seen as a powerful opportunity that needed to happen before change could occur.
"Although each case is different, my style of therapy generally addresses issues from the inside out by building qualities such as commitment, courage and emotional freedom. This allows people to break free from the inner barriers that stop them from having a life that they love. Old patterns from the past give way to new possibilities for the future. Situations initially seen as a crisis become opportunities for positive, lasting changes to take place" Gordon Wagner.
